It helps to explain Barcola to anyone new to Trieste: the sea is straight across the road. The rowing and sailing clubs are moments away — this is the home of the Barcolana — the dinghy club a couple of minutes off, along with the moorings for a sailing boat or a dinghy. Tennis and padel courts, the new sports centre about to open, the seafront restaurants and the Pineta pine grove are all walkable. The city centre is roughly ten minutes away; Viale Miramare is well served by buses and sits by the Costiera road towards Sistiana and Portopiccolo, with Miramare Castle close by. A quiet green compound where even children can cycle about freely.
